Did you know that all electronic circuits contain passive components? Without those components, electronic circuits do one of two things. They either become unstable, or you can count on them not working at all. Just like cells are the building blocks of life, passive components are the building blocks of electronic circuits.

What Are Passive Components?

What else do you need to know about passive components? You might think they generate energy because they are used in electronic circuits and are the building blocks for them. However, the keyword here is ‘passive,’ so these components do not actually generate energy. Instead, the components store energy, which makes sense if you think about it.

Did you know that passive components aren’t just used in resistors and capacitors, but also transformers and other heavy duty equipment? It has already been established that they do not generate energy but in fact store energy. It also needs to be said that they do not require energy to operate like active components would require. That really paints a picture of these passive components being quite important, doesn’t it? After all, they are the building blocks if electronic circuits.

Amplification and Directional

There is no gain involved when it comes to what passive components provide for circuits. In fact, it is all about attenuation. Amplification and directionality are not part of what passive components do for electronic circuits either. Now, when it comes to these components being used in circuits, are they used together in bunches, all connected?

They can be, or the passive components can also be used individually. They are used to help with many applications, but one restriction is that they can only multiply a signal once. Remember, there is no power gain involved, and so that is the limit. They still do a whole lot of things like control signals and help produce what’s called a phase shift

Passive Components Are Positive

It does need to be said that passive components do consume power. Passive components are also positive, not negative. Polarity markings can prevent passive components from being bi-directional, but for the most part, bi-directional is what they are. When you start looking into all kinds of information about passive components, everything gets a little complicated, doesn’t it?
