As it turns out, they rely on a number of different electronic components, all of which work in conjunction to allow your devices to operate the way they were designed to. * Resistors.

These components are used for controlling the amount of voltage or current that is running through a circuit. For instance, you can use a resistor to limit the amount of current that finds its way from a power source to the device that is being powered. A good example of this can be seen with a simple circuit that uses a battery to power an LED light. It takes very little power to turn on an LED light. If you tried to run a current directly from the battery to the LED light, it most likely would overpower the light. On the other hand, if you put a resistor between the battery and the LED light, the resistor will limit the amount of power running through the circuit, ensuring that the light doesn’t get too much power.

*Diodes.

These components are designed in such a way that they only conduct electricity in a single direction. Light emitting diodes (LED) lights are one of the most common examples of diodes.

In essence, capacitors act like tiny batteries, storing a small amount of electricity that can be quickly discharged if it is needed. For instance, if the power to an electronic circuit drops for a split second, the power that has been stored in the capacitor can be released, preventing any interruption in the circuit.

These components can be used to turn a current on or off.

This list barely scratches the surface of all of the electronic components that are out there. Other components that you may want to learn about include relays, integrated circuits, and inductors. The more time and effort you can put into learning about basic electronic components, the easier it will be for you to understand how electronic devices work.

Once you get a good handle on all of the components that are out there, you can begin using them to design basic electronic devices of your own. As your knowledge continues to grow, you can build devices that are increasingly complex, regardless of whether you are just doing it for fun or for your profession.
